Dormaa Ahenkro Welcomes New Transport Terminal Under Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program

The Dormaa Ahenkro township witnessed a historic moment on November 18, 2024, as the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Hon. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, officially commissioned a state-of-the-art transport terminal. This milestone is part of the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program (GSCSP), a flagship initiative by the Government of Ghana.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Adjei-Mensah Korsah emphasized the government's commitment to enhancing urban infrastructure and improving living conditions in municipalities across the country. The Minister highlighted the transformative impact of the GSCSP, which has been operational since 2019 with a credit facility of $245 million from the World Bank. The program is designed to strengthen the institutional capacity of 35 Municipal Assemblies and provide essential infrastructure, including roads, markets, and transport terminals.

The newly constructed transport terminal boasts modern facilities, including a fire station, police post, passenger lounge, security post, revenue office, a 20-seater WC toilet, and fully electrified pavements. The terminal has already eased congestion in the city center, improved vehicular movement, and created a safer and more efficient transport environment.

The Minister also commended the Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly for leveraging the program to deliver additional projects, such as road upgrades, market redevelopment, and street electrification. These interventions have not only boosted economic activities but also enhanced urban security and the aesthetic appeal of Dormaa at night.

Hon. Adjei-Mensah Korsah charged the Municipal Chief Executive to ensure the proper maintenance and sustainability of the facility. He stressed the importance of safeguarding the investments to ensure long-term benefits for the people of Dormaa.

The Minister expressed profound gratitude to traditional leaders, contractors, consultants, and all stakeholders who contributed to the success of the projects. He also acknowledged the World Bank’s unwavering support for Ghana’s urban sector over the past three decades, facilitating growth through technical assistance and infrastructure investments.

The commissioning event was a celebration of collaborative efforts, showcasing the government's dedication to improving urban life while reaffirming its commitment to meeting the needs of rapidly growing urban populations.
