MMDCEs cautioned against confrontations

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MMDCEs) have been cautioned to desist from needless confrontations with traditional authorities, Members of Parliament (MPs) and assembly members in their community.

They were to interact with the community members to understand their needs for better growth and rather than being armchair administrators.

Hon. Daniel Botwe, Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development gave the advice at a three-day refresher course for Municipal and District Chief executive (MDAs) at Sunyani in the Bono Region.

He noted that lack of consultations dints the image of the District Assemblies and the Government thus, MMDCEs should work with Assembly staff to deepen transparency, promote popular participation and accountability at the local level. These, he said, were the hallmarks of successful leaders.

Hon. Botwe cited Clause two of Article 24(3), of the 1992 Constitution which provided the District Chief Executive to preside over Assembly meetings by the Executive Committee, be responsible for the day-to-day performance of the executive and administrative functions of the Assembly, and be the chief representative of the Central Government in the district.

The District Chief Executive success in office largely depends on how well they discharge these functions.

“Your ability to perform your functions creditably calls for innovation and thinking outside the box. It is said that you cannot continue doing the same thing over and over again and expect different results”. He added.
