Hajia Alima Mahama Inaugurates Projects in Sekondi-Takoradi

MLGRD26/03/19 The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD), Hajia Alima Mahama (MP), has inaugurated some development projects in Sekondi/Takoradi in the Western Region.

Some of the projects were funded by the Agence Francaise Development (AFD) with a concessionary loan of €40.5 million and a grant component of €0.5 million to the government of Ghana.

Projects commissioned by the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development are: The integrated Social Center at Effiakuma and the upgraded Kokompe Industrial enclave, both priority projects that were constructed under the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Programme (GUMPP). The Youth Development Center, Public Library and Office Complex was funded by the Urban Development Grant (UDG).

; a Social Center in Effiakuma, Training Center, a Youth Development Center, Public Library and office complex and a the Kokompe Industrial Enclave and Skills Training Center.

The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Mahama, who inaugurated the projects, requested the recipient Assembly’s to adopt a culture of maintenance so as to benefit the people for which the projects were built.

Hajia Alima Mahama (MP) took the opportunity to the appreciation and gratefulness of the recipient Assemblies to AFD, and hinted that negotiations are far advanced to extend the programme which ends in September 2019 further. The Minister explained that the project which initially covered four cities namely: Sekondi-Takoradi, Kumasi Tamale and Ho, may be extended to other recipient cities.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Effia Kwesiminstim Municipal Assembly, (EKMA), Hon. Kojo Acquah hoped that the Effiakuma Social Center, will address the high incidence of street children and some social challenges facing the municipality.

The he said was conceived to provide a-one-stop-shop service to the public which includes a and Information Center,  for skills development and counseling of victims from child trafficking and abused vulnerable groups.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, (STMA) Hon. K.K. Sam, said the Assembly also received support from GUMP to implement other components of the programme. These he said are the Second Tier and Third Tier projects.

Under these support measures, interventions such as Street naming for Sekondi Takorad, the construction of a 200m link road to Kokompe, Taxi Rank station, Provision of water supply to Kokompe enclave and the construction U-drain with a slab at the Effiakuma Integrated Social Center.
