MLGDRD Hosts Swiss Ambassador
April 7, 2021
Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Hon. Daniel Botwe has hosted a delegation from the Embassy of Switzerland led by Ambassador Philipp Stalder.
Discussions centred on support and grants by the Swiss Government to the Government of Ghana at the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies on their performance assessment and urban and rural mobility.
Hon. Botwe noted with gratitude the Swiss Government support over the years to Ghana especially at the local level and promised a deeper collaboration during his tenure and ensure that projects support from the Swiss Government were made more visible to beneficiaries at the local level.
Some sanctioning mechanism, according to the Minister, should be put in place to ensure Assemblies use resources allocated them efficiently and for the exact purpose.
Capacity building of people at the community level and strengthening of local authorities would be the Ministry’s focus to reflect and give meaning to decentralisation and local governance to the local people.
H.E. Stalder on his part congratulated the Minister on his appointment and noted that the Ministry is his first point of call after the appointments of Ministers by the current Government.
He noted that Ghana and Switzerland’s common interest goes beyond trade between the two countries, saying Ghana is an important trade partner with over 20 years of relationship and Swiss’ second portfolio with about 30 projects being implemented by Ministries, Departments and Agencies.
Ghana, he noted, has good governance, laid down structural reforms and strong local authorities with competencies to implement projects.
He called for strong collaboration and a good relationship and pledged Switzerland’s support to the Assemblies.
